Penguins aren’t interested in Mike Babcock

Mike Babcock is exploring new coaching opportunities around the NHL. Thanks to a career littered with winning records, a Stanley Cup and an extremely impressive international coaching record, Babcock has received a ton of interest and is a prized free agent, so to speak.

Babcock has been linked to numerous teams over the last few weeks, but apparently we can cross one off the list – the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Via the Trib:

“We are committed to our present coaching staff,” Rutherford told Trib Total Media on Saturday.

If that’s not enough to close the topic, there’s a quote from April which supports this statement.

Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse told Trib Total Media on April 25 that the organization backed current coach Mike Johnston.

“I know there’s been a lot of speculation out there, but (co-owners) Ron (Burkle) and Mario (Lemieux) never once considered a change,” Morehouse said. “We had a new coach who almost never had a chance to coach his full team because of injuries.

Babcock should be linked to plenty of teams, but it’s clear the Penguins aren’t a likely destination.
