One of the many rule changes the NHL rolled out for 2014-15 is the expansion of the trapezoid. By adding a couple of feet to both sides of the shape behind the goaltender’s net, the hope is that play will be kept at a higher pace as goalies play the puck out rather than having to wait for their defensemen to retrieve it.
The Ottawa Senators recently painted their ice, giving us a nice look at the new trapezoid.

As you can see, the trapezoid is considerably larger than it used to be. With Martin Brodeur’s career nearing its end, why not remove the silly thing all together?
