Alumni games are supposed to a time for fun as older guys get the chance to lace them up one more time to entertain fans of all ages. But, in Toronto’s alumni game against Detroit on Saturday, thing’s got a bit heated.
Longtime Red Wings center Kris Draper and former Leaf Gary Roberts got into a heated altercation.
The anger seemed to stem from Draper getting hit hard across the boards by Roberts. Draper took exception with the bump and cross-checked Roberts, attempting to agitate his opponent, even grabbing on to him. Roberts gave Draper a couple of swings with his stick, before the two exchanged words and had to be separated by referees.
It seemed a fight was going to break out, which would be the last thing I’d expect to happen at what’s supposed to be a for-fun game. But, Draper clearly was mad at Roberts for taking a run at him and made sure to let him know. Both players have been retired for a while, but it’s clear their passion (and anger) still exists while playing. While Draper’s a tough cookie, I wouldn’t want to fight against Roberts, who’s in ridiculous shape, as he works as a personal trainer for stars such as Steven Stamkos.
