This Week in NHL Stupid: You’re shooting at the wrong net!

Welcome once again to This Week in NHL Stupid, where we at Puck Drunk Love draft the silliness and the stupidity in hockey. And this particular week in NHL Stupid got off to a rip roaring start, as Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game winning goal on a sweet deflection …

Unfortunately, it was in his own net.

Now that was pretty stupid, but it wasn’t like it was a perfect top shelf corner shot against your own goalie, like Mikhail Naumenkov had this past week …

What exactly is going on this week?

The Pittsburgh Penguins make a couple of appearances this week, showing that Stanley Cup champions can also be involved in stupidity. In their first appearance, watch as Kris Letang takes a header through the open door on the bench, and pay particular attention to Marc-Andre Fleury’s reaction.

Because skates are stupid anyway. And so are suits. Especially the ones that Islanders studio analyst and former Injured Reserve frequent flyer Rick DiPietro wears:

That suit should have the Brady Bunch Variety Hour playing in front of it.

(That’s an old person reference.)

James van Riemsdyk scored the easiest goal he’ll ever score, thanks to some hijinks by Dylan McIlrath and James Reimer on Thursday:

That’s tag team stupidity.

Meanwhile, back to the Penguins, where Evgeni Malkin came to the aid of his goalie Matt Murray on Wednesday, by scrapping with goalie crasher T.J. Oshie. But while “protecting him”, Malkin did more harm than good.

Murray had to leave the game, leaving Marc-Andre Fleury to finish off the last :23 of the period. That’s all he needed to do. Should be easy, right?

That’ll teach Fleury to laugh so hard when his teammate trips through the open bench door, eh?
