Randy Carlyle says he hasn’t gotten an answer to why he was axed from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The former Leafs head coach and current Anaheim Ducks bench boss spoke with NHL.com, revealing he was never told why he was fired by Toronto’s front office.
“I’d leave those questions to the people that were above me,” Carlyle said. “If they don’t want to answer them, they never told me any reason.”
Honestly, Carlyle should be able to figure out why he was canned. He made the playoffs just once in his four years with the Leafs, losing dramatically to Boston in the first round in the club’s only appearance. While the Leafs might have been close to a winning record during his tenure, the teams were awful. They were constantly outshot and outplayed. Even if he was five games above .500 when he was canned, he just needs to look at a box score to see how his team was performing.
Thankfully for Carlyle he landed a sweet gig in Anaheim. The Leafs also got their man with Mike Babcock eventually coming in. So, let’s just say everybody won in this situation. If Carlyle really doesn’t know why he was fired, he’s completely oblivious. But, it was a tad strange considering the club’s position – but, not so strange it negated the argument of him being let go.
