Drew Miller would be more than happy to leave the Detroit Red Wings.
The 33-year-old veteran was demoted to the AHL this month following ongoing struggles. Miller has scored just five goals and one assist in 35 games. Miller outright admitted to Peter J Wallner of MLive.com that he’s hoping to get dealt during the upcoming trade deadline.
“Hopefully, I get traded. I want to be in the NHL – everyone wants to be there – so we’ll see how it goes.”
“I thought I played pretty well up there, so I just hope someone else feels the same and grabs me,” Miller said. “Nothing against the team here or the AHL. This is a good group of guys.”
Miller has managed to carve out an impressive nine-year career, despite never being anything more than a depth forward. With that said, it’s hard to imagine he’ll draw any interest on the open market. He’s consistently been a negative in both generating shots and total scoring output. Miller’s contract is cheap, at just over $1 million, but there’s little incentive for a team to acquire him and play him over a younger player with potential.
General manager Ken Holland is likely to honor his trade request, but finding a suitor might be difficult. The market for a depth winger with 57 career goals isn’t exactly flush.
