Canucks “walked away” from Evander Kane trade with Sabres

The Vancouver Canucks inquired on Sabres forward Evander Kane recently, but after the reported asking price was too steep, the organization walked away.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.ca reported the Canucks’ interest in Kane didn’t get far, after the Sabres’ asking price proved to be too high. The Canucks’ interest in Kane had percolated all week, as Vancouver was in desperate need for a legit 20-goal scorer. Kane being a Vancouver, native, playing junior hockey in the city, seemed like a logical fit.

“The story is that they did call and there were some conversations and John Weisbrod, the assistant general manager of the Canucks, was on the scouting list on Thursday night in Buffalo, which sent us all to DEFCON one,” said Friedman on the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada. “The word is Vancouver was not willing to pay the price that Buffalo was asking.”

“The Canucks said no and walked away from any potential trade.”

Kane is locked up until 2017-18 at a $5.25 million cap hit. Fighting injuries, the 25-year-old has only registered one assist in seven games this season. The Sabres don’t have much leverage considering Kane’s lack of production and past locker room and off-the-ice issues.

The Canucks could use a player with Kane’s talent, but at this point, he’s not worth anything more than a small gamble.
