Beau Bennett’s name was surprisingly absent from the Pittsburgh Penguins’ engraved Stanley Cup reveal, but the former Pens forward isn’t taking offense. In fact, he says he shouldn’t be on the Cup.

The New Jersey Devils forward tweeted Wednesday afternoon that there was no pride in having his name on someone else’s success. At first, it appeared he was taking a shot at the Penguins picking Kevin Porter (who didn’t appear in the playoffs) over him, considering he appeared in a playoff game in Pittsburgh.

The dig would have been justified, but Bennett immediately clarified he wasn’t talking about any former teammates, but himself. He tweeted “I don’t deserve to be on the cup because I didn’t do anything.”

Whether Bennett believes it or not, his name should be on the Stanley Cup. He spent parts of four seasons with Pittsburgh, battling a rash of injury issues. Bennett appeared in 33 games scoring 12 points in 2015-16 and he went scoreless in a single playoff game. That’s more than “not doing anything.” He wasn’t as instrumental, as say, Sidney Crosby or Matt Murray, but he had a part in helping the Penguins win it all.
His most recent tweet is incredibly sad. Bennett seems like a great guy, but doesn’t want Cup recognition despite it being well-deserved. It’s a shame.
