Phil Kessel made a huge impact for the Pittsburgh Penguins during their run to the Stanley Cup and he did so while battling an injury.
According to Sportsnet’s John Shannon, Kessel was injured in the first round of the playoffs after suffering a hand injury against the New York Rangers. He had surgery on Friday to fix the issue. The severity of his injury is unknown.

Kessel had a dynamic playoffs, scoring 10 goals and 22 points in 24 games, helping the Penguins win the Stanley Cup. He wasn’t just a participant in the result, but a huge factor and rightfully was considered for the Conn Smythe Trophy. It was fun to see Kessel enjoy himself on the ice and get some respect.
It’s insane the difference a year makes for Kessel’s reputation. While a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was criticized for his weight and attitude despite putting up elite goal-scoring numbers on a mediocre team. In Pittsburgh, he’s rectified those false claims. Not only was he beloved by his Penguins teammates, but he played his best when it mattered the most – all through a hand injury. That’s impressive. Hockey players often get too much love for toughness, but Kessel deserves all the credit thrown his way. He’s a warrior.
There’s no need to doubt Kessel’s ability or passion for hockey. He’s proven he’s both tough and committed. Hopefully the “Kessel won’t” narrative is over.
