P.K. Subban is finally speaking about the shocking trade which saw the Montreal Canadiens deal him to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber. The trade was baffling, but Subban was honest about the deal when speaking with Sportsnet’s Eric Engels in part one of a two-part interview, saying Montreal will always be his home.
“The feeling being back in Montreal, it’ll never change,” Subban said. “It’s always going to be like that for me. Montreal’s going to be home because of the relationships that I’ve built here. I love Montreal. I’ve always loved the city. When it really comes down to it, I never envisioned myself playing for any other team other than the Montreal Canadiens.”
It’s no surprise Subban shares such a bond for the city of Montreal and it’s people, as he’d established himself as both a treasured athlete and person. People who don’t care about the city don’t give $10 million to help a children’s hospital, as Subban generously did. It was clear he loved being in Montreal and wearing the Canadiens jersey.
Subban didn’t throw any heat towards general Marc Bergevin and told Engels he understood the NHL “is a business” and that “I can’t forget that.” It’s quite mature, which is the response from Subban. He could throw Bergevin under the bus, but he’s not that type of guy.
Watching the 27-year-old talk about the deal, it’s clear he’ll miss the city even if he’s excited about joining a much more competitive team in Nashville. Montreal will miss him as much as he will miss the city.
