Matt Murray is getting a street named after him.

The Pittsburgh Penguins goalie, who has unexpectedly led the Penguins on an impressive Stanley Cup run which has the team one win away from a Stanley Cup victory, has become quite popular in the city due to his strong play. On Wednesday, Pittsburgh City Council passed a “Will of Council” which will rename Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill to Matt Murray Avenue for a day, reports Lexi Belculfine the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The idea stemmed from the Pittsburgh radio show the Bubba Show on Star 100.7. They suggested in a “lightbulb moment” that councilors should change the name of the street in honor of the Penguins netminder. Apparently the plea worked and Matt Murray avenue was created.

“Hopefully the Penguins win the Stanley Cup Thursday, and we don’t have to rename it any other day,” Councilman Corey O’Connor told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The 22-year-old has been incredible in the playoffs for the Penguins with an impressive 14-3-2 record and a sparkling .925 save percentage. He’s looked like a seasoned veteran, not a rookie who only played 13 career games entering the postseason.

The street will be renamed Matt Murray Avenue on Thursday, as the Penguins look to defeat the San Jose Sharks and win the Stanley Cup. If Murray plays well, they might have to consider permanently renaming the street after him.
