George Parros joins the NHL’s player safety department

The NHL is bringing in a retired hockey enforcer to help enforce player safety.

James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports the NHL has hired former Anaheim Ducks tough guy George Parros in an unknown role at the league’s player safety department.

Parros might seem like an odd fit, but his resume is impressive. Parros went to Princeton University, where he majored in economics. He was chosen as the fourth-smartest athlete in sports by the Sporting News in 2010. On the ice, he was a completely different presence than his intellectual background. He joined the league in 2005-2006 and had a solid career, appearing in 474 career games. Parros racked up over 1,000+ career penalty minutes, developing a reputation as one of the game’s toughest players.

Bringing in Parros gives player safety head Stephane Quintal a smart, experienced player to collaborate and discuss ideas with. Based on his career, he’s the last person you’d expect to join the league’s player safety, but Parros is a shrewd hiring. He’ll serve the league well.
