Jim Benning needs to learn that it’s not always appropriate to talk.
The Vancouver Canucks GM appeared on TSN Radio Vancouver 1040 today to discuss the upcoming draft and free agency. When discussing the topic of Steven Stamkos, Benning said “He’s gonna have lots of interest across the league. But we’ll talk to him and see where it goes.”

Now, it’s great Benning is interested in acquiring Stamkos, but there’s a big problem with his comments. He’s tampering. Stamkos is still under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning and isn’t officially a free agent until July 1. That mean’s he’s not allowed to publicly discuss signing him – otherwise, he’ll face a penalty.
While tampering rules are a bit sketchy, former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson was fined for discussing potential interest in Henrik and Daniel Sedin back in 2009. The difference between the two cases is that Canucks general manager Mike Gillis had the league pursue tampering charges, so we’ll see if Steve Yzerman wants to do the same thing. Either way, it sure seems like tampering.
What’s the penalty for tampering? The Canucks could be facing a fine for Benning’s comments.
Benning has done a pretty awful job in Vancouver since being appointed as general manager. His latest public comments are just more ammo for his detractors. Why did he think this was something that was OK to discuss? Just wait a week until free agency. Cripes.
