It’s been a great couple of weeks for Wyatt Nelson and his dad Gerry.
The 12-year-old from Saskatoon and his blind dad got a chance to hang out with the Stanley Cup and were invited to a playoff game following the video going viral. On Tuesday, Wyatt was given the chance of a lifetime, getting to call play-by-play during the Blues Game 2 Western Conference Final against the San Jose Sharks.
The two were invited into the broadcasting chair by Chris Kerber and Kelly Chase, the radio broadcast team for the Blues, and Wyatt killed it in his national radio debut.

His dad Gerry told him how impressed he was with his son’s debut.
“At 12 years old, I don’t think I could have done what he just did, not in front of that many people and on the air. Calling a Western Hockey League game is one thing; the NHL is something entirely different,” Gerry told NHL.com “I’m so proud of him. I think he just rocked it.”

I agree with Gerry’s assessment. At 12, I could barely speak in public, let alone jump on a national broadcast. While Wyatt admitted he wishes he got a goal call, his favorite part of calling the action was calling goalie Brian Elliott’s big save in the first period.
“My favorite part was the call when Elliott made that big save in the first period,” he said. “‘Elliott with the flash of the pad.’ I love making that call.”
Wyatt was a natural. If he continues to pursue broadcasting, he’s definitely got a shot at having a career behind the booth.

This is amazing stuff from the Blues organization. Kudos for allowing the kid and his pop to have such an amazing time. Well done.
