Rich Peverley’s status in the NHL remains undecided. After suffering through an Atrial fibrillation incident back in 2014 when he was with the Dallas Stars, Peverley has been sidelined from the ice. He was cleared for off-ice workouts during 2014-15, but he still hasn’t formally made a decision about whether or not he should attempt a comeback.
According to the Boston Globe, Peverley’s agent Allain Roy indicates that the issue is still undecided. At 33, Peverley is currently an unrestricted free agent, but it’s doubtful any teams have come calling considering no one is certain he’ll be able to return to action. He served as a “helper” from the press box for the remainder of Dallas’ games in 2014-15, but he never held an official role as he debated his return.
Peverley’s situation is a frightening one and a bit too familiar for one of our writers here at PDL. Upon hearing exactly what Peverley has been through and has to go through, it’s pretty understandable why he has been so cautious in making a decision about his career. At some point, even the greatest love for the game has to be trumped by one’s own personal safety and health.
Even though Peverley hasn’t made a formal decision in either direction, it’s difficult to imagine him finding a success route back into the NHL. His situation was far too frightening and far too serious. All of the writers at PDL continually pull for Peverley, but a return to the NHL seems like too big of a liability.
