We’ve ran a lot of reports here at PDL over the last couple weeks and most of them originate from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. This time Friedman reports that the Boston Bruins are “very unlikely” to re-sign Carl Soderberg and are instead focusing on signing Dougie Hamilton to a new contract. The Bruins haven’t officially moved on from Soderberg, but it’s looking more and more likely that the forward will be able to hit the open market.
At 29, Soderberg’s services are going to be in high demand should he hit free agency. He tallied 44 points in 2014-15 and 48 points in 2013-14 and would be a nice depth addition for any number of teams. It’s still possible the Bruins will find a way to retain him, but it’s pretty doubtful given their tight salary cap situation.
Soderberg’s average cap hit with Boston was just barely over $1 million ($1,008,333 to be specific), but he’ll be able to command more money after two solid full seasons with the Bruins. It may not come as a surprise that the Bruins may move on from Soderberg (the speculation was there last season), but some fans will be disappointed that the current speculation is that the organization will let him walk free. A scenario in which the Bruins trade his rights for a draft pick would make a lot of sense if the team is prepared to move on.
