Mike Green is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2014-15 season and it’s safe to assume he’d draw plenty of interest on the open market. Is Green interested in testing out free agency? Based on his comments to the Washington media, not even a little bit. In fact, he had a somewhat morbid statement regarding how he sees his career unfolding.
Green’s comments via RMNB:
“My heart is in Washington. It always will be until something else happens. My focus is here. My focus is winning a championship here and giving that to the fans. As an organization, that’s what we want as a team. I’m a part of that until the day I die or retire.”
Is he planning on dying before his NHL career is over? Should we be worried? Green was probably just trying to say that his heart lies in Washington, but his comment ended up sounding kind of awkward. Long story short, Green has absolutely no desire to leave the Capitals but it’ll be up to the team and his agent to work out a new contract.
The Capitals are reportedly already talking to Green about a new contract, but nothing has been finalized. Green is making $6.25 million in 2014-15, but it’s difficult to assign a value to the 29-year-old moving forward. Critics have been quick to point out his flaws on defense, but it’s impossible to ignore how valuable he is on offense. Regardless, Green wants to be with the Capitals and the team is open to bringing him back. It sounds like a deal will eventually get done.
