Spoiler alert: Possibly our favorite hockey fight moment of the season took place last week. You probably already saw it as we covered it heavily when it happened, but how often do you see a guy punch himself in the head during a fight?
Oh, there were also four other fights which were pretty solid too.
5. Brandon Prust (MON) vs Brad Malone (CAR) – Dec. 29th
Is it just us, or do both men seem fairly uninterested in actually fighting? Malone in particular looks fairly bored as the fight begins, but all in all this was a fairly decent bout.
4. Zac Rinaldo (PHI) vs Jordin Tootoo (NJ) – Jan. 3rd
Blink and you’ll miss this fight, but it’s an intense one. The equipment goes flying, but neither fighter is in view. When they both emerge, it’s a flurry of quick punches and the fight is over almost as soon as it started.
3. Wayne Simmonds (PHI) vs Mark Fraser (NJ) – Jan. 3rd
The Flyers were trailing the Devils by four goals and Simmonds felt that the only way to settle the score was by fighting. That may have been a bad decision as Fraser wins by a lopsided margin.
2. Patrick Kaleta (BUF) vs Jared Cowen (OTT) – Dec. 29th
It was really, really hard not to name this the best fight of the week. Kaleta punched himself in the head (in Vine form!) and just kept on throwing. Kaleta was probably trying to loosen up some equipment and inadvertently hit himself, but it looked like Kaleta was a mad man trying to amp himself up. Incredible.
1. Jack Skille (CBJ) vs Joe Vitale (ARI) – Jan. 3rd
Who said guys with visors can’t fight? This is a great battle and we’re going to have to label it a draw. Actually, let’s label the officials as the losers of this one as once again they appear to break up a fight a bit prematurely.
