Flyers fans are trying to raise money to buy the Penguins

I know these Go Fund Me stunts are nothing more than that – just stunts that have no chance of happening. So, when a group of Flyers fans set up a Go Fund Me site to raise $750 million to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins in response to Mario Lemieux and company exploring a sale, it wasn’t ever something to be taken too seriously. But two cool things about this. One: Whatever money is actually raised will go to Flyers wives charities, which makes it more than just a pointless stunt. And two: the alterations that “ownership” would do if they actually owned the Penguins:

– Painting the entire inside of the arena Orange and Black
– Putting a giant photo of Claude Giroux on the outside of the building, facing the highway
– Repainting the parking lots stripes orange, with a Flyers logo in each spot
– Using colored thread to impose a beach ball in the net behind Fleury
– Make a wall of fame in the concourse with photos of our top donators

Flyers fans get a bad reputation … some of it deserved, I’m sure. But a charitable endeavor disguised as a troll job on one of your biggest rivals? That deserves a slow clap. The beach ball idea is phenomenal in and of itself.

Flyers fans will not own the Pittsburgh Penguins. But if nothing else, I’m sure Mario Lemieux will add an extra layer of background checking to make sure prospective owners don’t have any ties to the city of Philadelphia.
