Evander Kane: “I asked for a trade every off-season in Winnipeg”

Evander Kane has opened up about his past jubilation to play in Winnipeg: Apparently he didn’t have any. In an interview with The Hockey News’ Ken Campbell, the current Buffalo Sabres forwards said ““Yeah, I asked for a trade every off-season in Winnipeg.”

That’s pretty big news considering previous trade request reports have been denied in the past.

Kane was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres last season in a blockbuster trade with the Winnipeg Jets. After a slow start, posting three points in eight games, he was injured in Saturday’s game against the New jesery Devils and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

Kane, who’s been unfairly dragged through the mud on multiple occasions by certain members of the Winnipeg media, admitted in comments published by The Winnipeg Free Press to Campbell “I just didn’t feel as though (the Jets) had my back at all,” Kane said. “It would have been so simple to just squash it and put it to bed. It just became kind of a big deal.”

He says rumors got out of control in Winnipeg, and that he was maligned because of it.

“There are a lot of guys I could point to that everybody knows publicly who have done a lot worse or been accused of doing a lot worse things than I have,” Kane told THN, “but they don’t look like me. They don’t look like me.”

I totally agree with him in that regard. He was treated like dirt for having a little personality. Did he cross the line sometimes? Sure, but it was all harmless. He’s not one of the bad guys. I don’t blame him for wanting out.
