Chris Neil doesn’t want to “sit here and collect a paycheck”

Chris Neil has been at the center of numerous trade rumors over the past few weeks and months. Whether it’s a speculated deal to the Nashville Predators or the Chicago Blackhawks, plenty of teams have been connected to the current Ottawa Senators forward. Most of these rumors have lacked any kind of substance, but the persisting rumors have forced Neil to comment on the situation.

Via the Ottawa Citizen, Neil discusses his desire to stay with the Senators, but he doesn’t just want to sit around and collect his salary.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for (Senators general manger) Bryan Murray and for what he has done here. I indicated to (Murray) that this is where I want to be. But I want to be a part of it, too. I don’t just want to sit here and collect a paycheque.

I feel like I’ve got a lot more in the tank. I’m 35, but I feel like I’m 25. My energy level feels great.

I haven’t indicated that I want out of here or anything. I’ve taken less money (than was offered elsewhere) to stay here in previous contracts. It shows the loyalty I have to this organization. I’ve bled a lot and went a lot of miles with this team and I’ve got a lot left.”

In summary, Neil wants to see regular playing time. That’s an area the Senators might struggle with, but Neil might find time and be a valuable addition for a playoff team looking to add a physical forward. Grit is a trait hockey analysts love to mock, but a team runs the risk of being steamrolled in the playoffs if they’re lacking muscle and size.

Neil loves playing for the Senators, but it sounds like he’s realizing that he may be able to find a better opportunity with a new club. Regular playing time would also accompany a genuine shot to win a Stanley Cup, and those are two things the Senators can’t offer.
