Retired NBA great and current basketball analyst Charles Barkley is apparently a big hockey fan. He recently spoke with Sportsnet and discussed a variety of hockey topics, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs as well as his favorite team, the Arizona Coyotes. Barkley, a guy you probably would never associate with the frozen game, actually has some pretty interesting takes on the sport.
Even though Barkley is analyzing the NBA playoffs, he’s also glued to the NHL playoffs.
“I think the NHL playoffs are the best playoffs in the world. I have all the games on. There’s nothing more exciting than the hockey playoffs, so I’m getting pumped, man. I got about a month before everything gets started, and I can’t wait.”
He’s 100% correct. The NHL playoffs are awesome and even a guy who has lived and breathed the NBA for practically his whole life can admit to it.
Perhaps more interesting is the fact his favorite club is … the Coyotes? His hot take on the Coyotes is pretty spot on.
“We’re just trading everybody. We suck in hockey.”
It’s kind of hilarious he felt like he had to clarify that the Coyotes sucked in hockey as opposed to something else.
The rest of Barkley’s interview discussed the fact he believes a Canadians team winning the Cup would be good for the sport (as if hockey needs help growing in Canada) and that he’s quite fond of Barry Melrose. Click here to read the rest of his comments.
