Stars are worried about Anders Lindback and their backup goaltending

The Dallas Stars may have a problem in net. Kari Lehtonen has played well, but the team is lacking stability behind him and may need to explore new options beyond Anders Lindback. Lindback was supposed to be the solution after the team used Dan Ellis and Tim Thomas in previous seasons, but so far he has lacked confidence and left a lot to be desired. Lindback is currently maintaining a 4.58 GAA and .850 save percentage, which places the Stars in an awkward position.

Head coach Lindy Ruff commented on the situation following the team’s loss to the Islanders:

“I thought he had a tough night. We gave some pretty good opportunities, but at the same time you have to get some saves. It’s part of his role, and it’s not easy, but we needed a few tonight.

It’s something we’re putting a hard look into. We liked him through camp, and he’s had a little bit of a struggle.”

It sounds like Lindback’s job is in serious jeopardy. Lindback’s leash may be even shorter due to the fact the backup role has been a reoccurring problem for the Stars over the last few seasons. Would Ilyz Bryzgalov be a fit?

You can pencil in Lehtonen for between 55 and 65 starts this season, but the Stars still need to find a backup who can make a big save when called upon. Considering the Stars are expected to be one of the top teams in the West, the club needs an option behind Lehtonen who can provide some needed stability and some time off for Lehtonene. Is Lindback that goaltender? So far, it doesn’t look like it and Ruff’s comments hint that the club may be ready to explore a new option.
