Slava Voynov charged with a felony in domestic abuse case

Slava Voynov has been charged with a felony in the domestic abuse case which led to his indefinite suspension from the NHL back in October. According to ESPN, the exact charge is one felony count of corporal injury to spouse with a great bodily injury. Voynov will be arraigned on December 1st.

Here’s what we know about the situation from the district attorney’s office, as seen in the LA Times:

During an argument at their Redondo Beach home on Oct. 19, Voynov caused his wife to suffer injuries to her eyebrow, cheek and neck. The injuries were serious and required medical attention at a local hospital where the defendant was arrested.

Voynov’s attorney, Craig Renetzky, has continued to state that his client is innocent and the entire situation is a misunderstanding.

Renetzky:

“Mr. Voynov is extremely disappointed that the district attorney’s office elected to file charges. Mr. Voynov maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name in court. We remain confident.”

It sounds like a grim situation for Voynov, but we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out. We haven’t seen the evidence, so we’re not going to hand out a verdict. The initial findings we’ve heard from the media don’t sound good, but we shouldn’t assign guilt without being privy to the entire situation. With that being said, the NHL and the LA Kings have done the correct thing by suspending Voynov until this matter is resolved.
