At 39, Saku Koivu has decided to hang up his skates. After spending 18 seasons in the NHL, Koivu ultimately decided that it was in his best interest to call it a career rather than attempting to play in a 19th. Though some expected him to skate in one more season, Koivu now leaves the game after appearing in 1,124 games and scoring 255 goals and 577 assists.
Why did Koivu call it quits? It ultimately came down to him wanting to end his career on his own terms. The Anaheim Ducks passed on giving Koivu an extension this summer, allowing the veteran to explore the free agent market. Several teams were linked to Koivu, including a rumored return to Montreal, but nothing was enticing enough to prevent him from retiring.
Last season was a rough one for Koivu as he suffered through a concussion which forced him to miss the Sochi Olympics. Though it appears he left his concussion issues behind him, there’s probably a lingering thought in Koivu’s mind telling him to quit while he’s ahead. It’s better to get out before a more serious injury or perhaps an additional concussion causes serious damage which would impact his life after hockey.
While it’s sad to see him go, it’s nice to see him walk out on his terms. Congratulations on a great career!
