Report: Florida Panthers shopping first overall pick

The Florida Panthers head into the 2014 NHL Draft with the first overall pick after edging out the Buffalo Sabres for the top selection during the NHL Draft Lottery. Though they had just an 18.8% chance of improving their spot, that’s exactly what happened as the Panthers jumped from the second spot to the first spot.

What are the Panthers planning to do with their pick? According to one recent report, they’re actively shopping it and want to make a trade.

The Panthers trading away their top pick wouldn’t be a surprise. The organization had the number one selection in both the 2002 and 2003 Draft, but traded both of those away. Considering this year’s crop of prospects is widely believed to be a rather weak field, it may not be a bad idea for the team to trade their pick away, especially if they’re hoping to win now.
