Report: Daniel Alfredsson won’t play this season

The Daniel Alfredsson comeback may be over before it ever really started. A report from TSN states that word is leaking out that Alfredsson will not be able to play this year. The report states that while the Detroit Red Wings haven’t officially heard about Alfredsson’s status or decision, they have heard that his comeback attempt is over.

Via TSN:

Sources tell The Dreger Report that Alfredsson has decided not to play this season and while the Red Wings have been informed he is likely done, they have not heard directly from Alfredsson.

Alfredsson has been plagued by an injured disc in his back over the past few years, a lingering problem that he is able to manage off ice, but is continually aggravated by the wear and tear of game action.

Disappointing, but not exactly surprising news. Alfredsson appeared to hit setback after setback in his comeback bid to play in a 19th NHL season. We had previously believed we would know what his decision regarding 2014-15 would be during training camp, but an ailing back caused that decision to be repeatedly delayed.

Alfredsson hasn’t officially retired, but it’s a safe bet that this failed comeback at age 42 is the end of the road. It’s sad to see a player of his status end on such a disappointing note and not on his own terms, but that’s the way things go sometimes. Alfredsson had a tremendous career. Here’s to hoping hockey fans remember him for what he contributed during his prime as opposed to his inability to muster up one more season.
