Head coach Barry Trotz is supposed to bring change to the Washington Capitals. That change may be coming sooner than expected as he revealed he plans to have Alex Ovechkin skate on both the left and the right wing as the team prepares to enter training camp.

The question is, where will Ovechkin feel the most comfortable and which position gives the Capitals the best overall offensive attack? That remains to be seen, but you could make the case that Ovechkin will be effective on either side and the actual positioning is irrelevant. The better question to ask relates to the players surrounding Ovechkin. If Ovie is on the left, who skates with him? On the right? If he isn’t being fed the puck and if his teammates aren’t creating space for him, it doesn’t really matter which side of the ice he’s on.
Regardless, Trotz is aiming to change the Capitals and we’ll have to wait and see if it’s for the better. Considering Ovechkin is coming off of a 51-goal campaign and appears to be back in the form of old, it might be risky moving him back and forth between the left and right side of the ice.
