What goes into this ranking? Shot attempts for percentage, offensive/defensive zone starts, goals for percentage and puck luck are the elements of this analytic power ranking. Keep in mind that based on the 2013-14 NHL season, 13 out of 16 playoff teams ranked in the top 16 of these same analytics power rankings.
Largest change in power ranking from last week: The Vancouver Canucks had the largest upswing this past week moving up five spots from 20 to 15. While the biggest drop was on behalf of the Philadelphia Flyers dropping from 19 to 25 for a total of six spots.
Teams currently outside the playoffs in points but in the top 16 of the rankings: New York Rangers, Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars.
Teams currently in the playoffs based on points but outside of the top 16 in the rankings: Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Three teams with the most luck: Nashville (3.3), Pittsburgh (2.7), Calgary (2.0).
Three teams with the least luck: Edmonton (-3.4), Columbus (-3.0), Carolina (-2.8).
Biggest change in power ranking based on luck: The Flames, Kings, Rangers, Blues and Devils would all move up two spots in the rankings if they had a league average luck rating. While both the Capitals and Hurricanes would move down four spots if their luck was at the league average.
