The Dallas Stars made it known when they traded for Jason Spezza that he wasn’t a one-year rental. As soon as the trade was official, the Stars stated their intent to sign Spezza to a nice extension. The only real question surrounded whether or not Spezza would want to play in Dallas beyond 2014-15. Apparently that answer will have to wait as Spezza wants to “get comfortable” before making a decision.
As seen over on ESPN, Spezza had some comments regarding an extension:
“They’ve expressed that they want to talk [extension]. And we have all intentions of talking. But it’s just I want to get comfortable first, and get started. It’s really not a big concern of mine right now. I’m not naive, I know as the season goes on it’ll become more of a talking point. But at this point, I’m just worried about playing and getting comfortable. If we start winning games, it’s going to be a good fit for both sides. It’s just a matter of getting comfortable first. There’s no point in rushing into anything.”
No real surprises here. Spezza hasn’t even played an official non-exhibition game for the Stars and at 31, he wants to keep his options open. What if the Stars defy our expectations and bomb this year? What if the picture looks grim for the organization beyond 2014-15? Spezza would then be free to test other options, free of regret of attaching himself to a team he’s just starting to learn about.
Stay tuned. Unless there’s some major chemistry issues (which winning usually fixes, by the way) or unless the team offers a laughable paycheck, Spezza will likely remain in Dallas.
