The first month of 2014-15 is officially in the books. So far the year has yielded plenty of surprises, a ton of talking points and some memorable fights. As we’ve mentioned in one of our previous installments, the number of fights seems to be on the decline which makes our job a difficult one. Teams are becoming more and more focused on scoring goals and winning games than dropping the mitts. That will change as teams grow frustrated and rivalries renew, but for now enjoy the best from a limited sample of scraps.
5. B.J. Crombeen (ARI) vs Michael Latta (WAS) – Nov. 2
This fight barely qualifies as an actual fight. We’re not sure if a single punch found the mark and the two men seemed to be preoccupied with spinning around than with throwing any actual punches. This one has to be a draw, but we’d label both players as losers in this fight if we were allowed.
4. Jay McClement (CAR) vs Brad Richardson (VAN) – Oct. 28
This is actually a pretty good altercation once you consider how rarely McClement drops his gloves. Richardson isn’t exactly a regular fighter either, but you may not know that based on how the two went toe-to-toe in this one.
3. Tom Wilson (WAS) vs Radko Gudas (TB) – Nov. 1
This is a physical, violent bout which features one of our favorite things – equipment flying through the air. Wilson may earn the win after slamming Gudas into the cage, but both men put on a solid show.
2. Chris Neil (OTT) vs Jared Boll (CBJ) – Oct. 28
Neil and Boll previously fought back on November 5th of 2013 and here they renew their rivalry. This time it looks a little bit more personal, as evidenced by Neil placing his hand in Boll’s face after the punches have ceased. This won’t be the last time we see these two dance.
1. Milan Lucic (BOS) vs Chris Stewart (BUF) – Oct. 30
We normally won’t applaud staged fights which take place right off of a draw – especially those which occur less than a minute into the game – but this Lucic-Stewart scrap is worth watching. It’s pretty tough to pick a winner seeing as both men appeared to inflict some pain.
