Devils unveil unique coaching by committee situation

Shortly after the New Jersey Devils fired head coach Pete DeBoer, the attention soon shifted to potential replacements for the vacated position. Scott Stevens and Adam Oates were a couple of the names discussed, but the Devils opted to go in a new direction. They hired both men. The club also announced that GM Lou Lamoriello would be behind the bench, overseeing things as Stevens manages the defense and Oates handles the offense.

If all of the above sounds like a giant mess, you’re absolutely correct. Instead of bringing clarity to what can be a difficult transition process, the Devils are splitting up responsibilities and for some reason Lamoriello is taking on even more responsibilities.

Yes. Yes, it is.

This all comes at a time in which the Devils would probably benefit from Lamoriello stepping aside.

How about Head Coach 1 and Head Coach 2? It’s normal for a team to have a coach in charge of the offense and one in charge of the defense, but this almost seems like the team is rolling with two head coaches and a GM who is a bit too involved. This bizarre situation is the last thing the Devils need. Instead of making a decision which makes the future seem bright, this move confuses and makes the future look even more cloudy.
