The Boston Bruins have just one win through their first four games and the team has already made some changes. The Bruins waived Bobby Robins and sent Jordan Caron down to the AHL. The news which generated the most buzz was that the Bruins signed Simon Gagne to a one-year, $600,000 contract.
What will Gagne’s role be with the Bruins? Here’s what the 34-year-old forward had to say to NHL.com:
“I don’t know. Like my conversation with Peter was whatever it takes. I’ll be whatever. If I have to be the extra guy, if I have to be on the fourth line or a guy that will replace some guys when things are not going well, or injuries, playing the PK, power play, whatever it takes. I’m here to help the team win and I’m really happy that I have a chance to get back into the League with a good team. So I’m open to everything.”
It sounds like Gagne is planning on serving in a utility role with the Bruins and that may be exactly what the team ends up doing. Gagne most recently recorded a total of 38 goals between the LA Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers back in 2012-13, and still has some offensive spark left. Seeing as the Bruins have tallied just four goals through their first four games, the team will happily accept a source of offensive anywhere they can find it.
Though Gagne is removed from his best years in the NHL, he still should be able to offer something offensively. It’s early in the year, but the Bruins need something different to get their forwards going. Will Gagne be that spark?
