The Anaheim Ducks can not catch a break with their defense. Following several injuries, the Ducks traded for defenseman Eric Brewer. The goal was to stabilize the team’s defensive unit while they battle through injuries and add a bit of additional depth. Unfortunately for the Ducks, Brewer’s tenure with the team came to a screeching halt after just two games when he suffered a broken bone in his foot.
Brewer’s injury is expected to keep him out for four to six weeks. The timing of the injury is brutal for the Ducks and not just because Brewer has barely spent any time with his new team. The Ducks have been plagued by the injury bug, losing several defenders as well as goaltender Jason LaBarbera. The original injuries to Francois Beauchemin, Ben Lovejoy and Mark Fistric contributed to the Ducks pulling the trigger on the Brewer trade.
What are the Ducks going to do? In net, they may be forced to call on Ilya Bryzgalov. On defense, they will be relieved to have Clayton Stoner back after his battle with mumps. The Ducks are still one of the top teams in the West, but they may have a difficult time retaining that position if their rotten run with injuries continues.
