Report: John Tavares will be the next captain of the New York Islanders

The New York Islanders are ready to name their next captain. After Mark Streit signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers this summer, the Isles knew they would have to select their 14th captain in franchise history. Who would take over the role? Is that a question you really had to ask?

John Tavares will soon be named the new captain of the New York Islanders, as reported by Arthur Staple of Newsday.

This might be the least surprising hockey news of the summer. Even when Streit was the captain of the Islanders, Tavares has been the face of the team ever since he came up in the NHL back in 2009-10. During his four years in the NHL, Tavares has grown from a talented youngster into a lethal offensive weapon and a "lead by example" player.
