The calendar has flipped to April. That means we are just a few weeks away from the final day of the regular season (April 27). Thanks to a condensed schedule, nearly every team is still in the hunt for a playoff spot. As a result, more games matter and more teams are fighting for their lives – literally.
5. Marcus Foligno (BUF) vs. Keith Aulie (TB) – March 26
Despite the abbreviated season, some teams are still all but out of the playoff picture with a few weeks left to play. Unfortunately, this includes the Buffalo Sabres and the Tampa Bay Lightning. When you're not fighting for a playoff spot, you might as well drop the gloves and fight each other.
4. Kevin Westgarth (CAR) vs. Frazer McLaren (TOR) – March 28
Westgarth was one tough customer when he was with the Los Angeles Kings. As it turns out, he's still a guy you don't want to mess with now that he's with the Carolina Hurricanes. Lesson learned by McLaren as he loses this one to Westgarth.
3. Jordan Nolan (LA) vs. Brandon Bollig (CHI) – March 25
We have a soft spot for fights that start with both players ditching their helmets. Add in a balanced fight with plenty of punches and a fired up Bollig in the penalty box, this was easily one of the best fights of the week and one of the best in the month of March.
2. Jared Boll (CBJ) vs. Mike Brown (EDM) – March 28
Few hockey analysts predicted the Columbus Blue Jackets would be battling for a playoff spot in April. You could probably count the number of NHL experts that thought the Blue Jackets had a shot at a top-8 finish on one hand.
We imagine Brown was one of those doubters and Boll wanted to set the record straight.
1. Patrick Bordeleau (COL) vs. Brian McGrattan (CGY) – March 27
If you're a regular here at PDL, you might recall that we said Colorado's Bordeleau would be a fighter to watch. Today is the day we can say that we told you so. It's nearly impossible to pick a winner in this bout, but it's safe to say that this is one of the best fights without a clear winner that we've seen in 2013.
