The most popular hockey pages on Wikipedia revealed

Have you ever wondered which hockey page on Wikipedia sees the most traffic? Thanks to a group of individuals under the WikiProject Ice Hockey label, the answers are now revealed.

The full list, which can be seen here, is loaded with surprises and rather odd findings. Which NHL player has the most popular page? What odd findings are revealed in the list of most popular pages? Find out below.

The moment you’ve all been waiting for. The most popular NHL player on Wikipedia is … Al Montoya. According to their findings, Montoya’s page sees an average of just over 8,000 views a day – a number that bests the league’s main page by roughly 4,400 a day.

Seriously? Al Montoya? The answer here may be more simple than you might first think. Unfortunately, Montoya’s popularity on Wikipedia likely has nothing to do with his skills on the ice. In reality, Montoya’s popularity might be due to confusion with the character from “The Princess Bride”, Inigo Montoya.

Searchers hunting for the infamous Inigo Montoya quote (“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”) likely stumbled on the goaltender for the Islanders by mistake.

The surprises on the list don’t end there. While Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky understandably check in at the third and fourth spot on the list, Mike Comrie can be found at the fifth spot. Wait, what? Comrie recently retired from a rather unremarkable NHL career and is now known most for being married to actress/singer Hilary Duff. Is Comrie’s popularity due to his connection to Duff or due to his NHL career? It’s impossible to know the answer but it is shocking to see just how popular Comrie’s Wikipedia page is.

The rest of the top-10 looks like this:

1. Al Montoya
2. National Hockey League
3. Mario Lemieux
4. Wayne Gretzky
5. Mike Comrie
6. Ice hockey
7. Don Cherry
8. Randy Carlyle
9. Sidney Crosby
10. Madison Square Garden

Surprised to see Don Cherry at the seventh spot? You’re not alone. Known for his rants and odd choice in fashion, Cherry’s popularity likely comes for all the wrong reasons. Cherry’s popular Wikipedia page is either from people trying to get to the bottom of his strange fashion or to the bottom of his often controversial statements.

You’ll also find that the movie Happy Gilmore, which briefly mentions hockey, is more popular than the New Jersey Devils.
