Real change is coming to the Edmonton Oilers. Even prior to landing the first pick which has Connor McDavid’s name written all over it, the organization was on the right track in their efforts to rebuild. That trend continued when they brought in Todd McLellan as the new head coach and continues now that they’ve parted ways with their top scouts.

In addition to firing their head amateur and head pro scout, the Oilers also fired a few of their other scouts.
EDM fired head amateur scout Stu MacGregor tonight as well as two other amateur scouts and one pro scout.

The Oilers now have a significantly changed appearance in their front office. Though the Oilers have talked about making changes and rebuilding in the past, this offseason they’re actually following through and making big adjustments.
The timing of these firings is pretty interesting and even a bit peculiar. The Oilers removed these scouts from their post roughly a week before the 2015 NHL Draft. If the Oilers didn’t have faith in these scouts (they obviously didn’t and wanted to make a change), then it makes sense to prevent them from influencing the upcoming draft. However, the timing of this change doesn’t offer the Oilers much time to adjust their strategies before June 26th and June 27th.
Change is coming. It may take time for the Oilers to transform into legitimate Cup contenders, but fans should be pleased to see all of the new faces in the front office.
