Back in December, a report surfaced that the Boston Bruins would host the 2016 Winter Classic inside Gillette Stadium. The league hasn’t commented on the 2016 Winter Classic publicly, but a few more rumors have popped up since that original report.
According to WEEI 93.7, the Bruins will host the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 Winter Classic. This new report indicates that the Bruins will in fact be hosting their second Winter Classic, but this time the location will be Gillette Stadium instead of Fenway Park. In 2010, the Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers, but the 2016 matchup will feature the Canadiens in their very first Classic.
Hockey fans probably won’t be too thrilled with this news. It’s pretty frustrating that a team which already hosted a Winter Classic is receiving another one just a handful of years later. While it is nice to see the Canadiens finally appear in a game, it’s silly that Boston will once again serve as host.
As for the venue, again the NHL picked a fairly unexciting location. Instead of going for the historic angle (Wrigley, Fenway) or going with the gimmick angle (huge crowd in The Big House), the 2016 Winter Classic will be in a fairly standard NFL stadium.
It’s time for the NHL to listen to our advice on how the league can improve the Winter Classic.
