Former Colorado Avalanche forward Marek Svatos tragically passed away at the age of 34 last month. Svatos was found dead at his Colorado home. This week, the cause of his death was officially confirmed. According the Denver Post, Svatos passed away after overdosing on drugs. The report unveiled that Svatos dealt with suicidal thoughts and was found with a cocktail of drugs in his system.
He had a history of heroin use and had gone through drug rehabilitation, according to the coroner’s report. He also had suspected depression, prior suicidal ideation, and “recent life stressors.”
“Drug paraphernalia was found at the scene,” the report said.
Blood panels found traces of codeine, morphine and the anti-anxiety medication Xanax.
Svatos had an up-and-down NHL career. He scored 32 goals in his rookie season in 2005-2006, but never produced at that rate again during the rest of his NHL career. He battled multiple injuries, including ACL, groin and concussion issues. Svatos appeared for four teams in his career, last suiting up with the Ottawa Senators in 2010-2011. He scored 100 goals and 172 points in 344 career games.
Svatos left behind a wife and two children.
Considering the details of Svatos’ death, it’s important to remember that he was a person struggling with real problems. Drug issues shouldn’t me maligned or spoke of in a demeaning manner. Svatos had a problem and it cost him his life. It’s an incredibly sad ending for a once-promising player.
