Brent Sopel is fighting his dyslexia head-on by re-enrolling in college.
In an excellent feature by Justin Breen of DNAInfo Chicago, Sopel discusses battling the reading disorder throughout his life. He said he hid behind the problems and rarely wrote emails or read books to his kids, instead opting to make up his own stories.
Growing up in Saskatchewan, Sopel recalled being humiliated in ninth grade when asked if he could read a single page to class.
“Kids were laughing hysterically. It was one of the worst experiences you could have. It wasn’t fun at all,” said Sopel, who now lives in Hinsdale. “I just remember I was staring at a bunch of words and basically I was scared s——-.”
Sopel is now taking on Dyslexia head-on, enrolling to Ashworth College, in an online program.
Sopel’s story of battling dyslexia is inspiring and I highly recommend you read Breen’s entire feature. Hopefully, kids with Dyslexia hear about the story and get the courage to face it. Sopel’s a good man. Best of luck at Ashworth College.
