LAS VEGAS, NV – FEBRUARY 10: Fidelity National Financial Inc. A Las Vegas franchise would play in a USD 375 million, 20,000-seat arena being built on the Strip by MGM Resorts International and AEG that is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016. Report: Las Vegas NHL team might be called the Desert Knights

It has always been the desire of the Las Vegas NHL team to somehow have the word “Knights” somewhere in their name. The owner, Bill Foley, is a graduate of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and he wanted to name his team after his alma mater. After some hemming and hawing, he may have just gotten his wish.

Three domain names have been registered to Moniker Private Services, the same place that has registered all of the NHL’s domain names. The names registered according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal are  lasvegasdesertknights.com, vegasdesertknights.com and desertknightshockey.com.

The name Desert Knights fits both Foley’s wish to have the Knights somewhere in the name and Vegas’ need to acknowledge that they are in fact out in the desert. When Foley was asked for comment by the Review-Journal, he had no comment regarding the process.

Make no mistake, this has become a process and it is taking an awfully long time for Las Vegas to come up with a name. No matter what name is selected, it will be routinely criticized. That is the day and age we live in, whether it be Night Hawks, Desert Hawks or Red Hawks, all names that have been rumored for the team will be scrutinized because everyone has an opinion. Desert Knights fits owner Bill Foley’s checklist and as long as he is happy, fans should be too.
