Tomas Jurco is one of the most intriguing players on the roster for the Detroit Red Wings, but the 23-year-old will get off to a slow start in 2016-17. Jurco recently had back surgery for a back injury he suffered while working out in Slovakia. The Red Wings brought Jurco back to the United States for surgery and he is expected to need approximately two months to recover.
The details regarding the injury, which was reported on by the Detroit Free Press, hasn’t been specifically outlined. It’s not clear what kind of workout injured the forward. The only details being released state that Jurco will need 4-6 weeks of minimal movement and then another month to get back up to speed. He may make an appearance in camp, but it’s doubtful he’ll be close to a full participant.
Jurco is an intriguing player because of his exciting 2013-14 which was followed up with two mediocre seasons. After skating in just 44 games in 2015-16 in which Jurco managed just four goals and two assists, it may be time to produce or move on. His current contract expires at the end of 2016-17 and though his cap hit is less than $1 miller per year, his production leaves a lot to be desired.
In what might be the most pivotal season of his career, Jurco now also needs to overcome an early injury while trying to rediscover his game.
