Agent: “All indications” point to Kyle Okposo hitting free agency

It sounds like Kyle Okposo won’t be with the New York Islanders in 2016-17. According to ESPN, Okposo’s agent, Pat Brisson, believes that the forward is likely headed for free agency as talks with the Islanders haven’t resulted in a new deal.

His agent, Pat Brisson, did recently chat with Isles GM Garth Snow, but it doesn’t sound like anything developed. “All indications are that we’re headed to free agency with Kyle,’’ Brisson said Monday.

Okposo is set to become an unrestricted free agent after wrapping up his old five-year, $14 million deal at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season. The Islanders had no issue squeezing him in under the cap with his old deal (and its $2.8 million cap hit), but Okposo is due for a raise heading into the new season.

Okposo had a career-high in total points in 2015-16, recording 64 points in 79 games. That point total was good enough for second on the Isles, trailing only John Tavares. Okposo’s strong production carried into the playoffs where he had two goals and six assists in 11 games.

The Islanders would love to have Okposo back for 2016-17, but his asking price might be above what the club is willing to pay considering all of the other areas to address on the roster. Rumors have suggested he’s looking for something in the neighborhood of $6 million per year which is a hefty price tag all things considered.

There’s going to be plenty of suitors after Okposo’s services and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens should he hit the open market.
