Barry Melrose might take some heat from co-workers and Pittsburgh Penguins fans over his recent predictions.
The ESPN analyst and former Tampa Bay Lightning head coach made predictions throughout the playoffs as a part of ESPN’s ongoing posts about each round. Melrose didn’t seem to have a lot of faith in the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins. As Reddit user slimjim1135 pointed out, not only did Melrose not pick Pittsburgh to win the Stanley Cup, but he actively picked against the team in every single round of the playoffs.
To be fair to Melrose, the Penguins did play good teams along their way to the Stanley Cup – but it’s hilarious that Melrose, one of ESPN’s top hockey analysts, picked against the Penguins in each and every round. It’s a tough break for him. He genuinely believed Pittsburgh would be out in the first round.
Melrose did accurately predict the Sharks would play in the Stanley Cup Final, so kudos to him for that, but it’s clear he didn’t believe the Penguins were capable of winning the Cup. I’m sure Pittsburgh fans who thought Melrose was biased against their team have acquired even more reasons to distrust his opinion on the team – even if he wasn’t intentionally trying to shade the club with his predictions. Well done Barry.
