Here’s a story that reads like it comes straight from a crime novel.
Vancouver Canucks forward Linden Vey’s father, Curtis Vey, is set to face trial with co-accused Angela Nicholson for allegedly attempting to murder their spouses, reports Jason Botchford of The Province. The two reportedly had an affair as it’s alleged Curtis planned on killing Brigitte Vey, Liden’s mom, in a house fire, while Nicholson was going to kill her husband via drug overdose.
The charges stem back from 2013 and were widely reported, but the connection to Vey hadn’t been made until recently. Vey’s dad is set to face trial with Nicholson on May 24, as both were charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Even though Vey, who Botchford reports is standing by his mom through the trial, could easily use the horrible family drama as an excuse, he said it’s not the reason why he has struggled with the Canucks.
“It changes your life,” Vey said. “Your life is a certain way for so many years and all of a sudden, you wake up one day and it’s totally different.
“But I’m not going to sit here and say it’s part of the reason I’ve had two of the worst seasons of my career.”
Canucks president Trevor Linden said he’s never seen a player deal with something like a murder conspiracy.
“Every player deals with certain distractions in their life, challenges,” Linden told Botchford. “I think that’s normal. I don’t think there has ever been a player who has dealt with something like this.”
While it’s easy for Vey to say it’s not the reason he’s struggled, it had to hang heavy over his head for the better part of three years. Once the trial starts and a resolution is found, hopefully he can find closure and have bounce-back in his hockey career.
