Video: Tampa Bay Lightning fire the puck into their own net

You'll see a handful of own goals scored during the course of an NHL season. Few will rival the one scored by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.

Protecting a 5-4 lead with roughly 1:50 left in the third period, Matt Carle threw the puck back into his own zone. The pass to Radko Gudas was too hot to handle and it kicked off of the defenseman's skate and past goaltender Ben Bishop.

That's an odd one. Why did Carle put so much on his pass? Did a pass really need to be made in the first place? We're assuming Carle is just so used to being on the receiving end of a pass back that he forgot how to dish one himself.

Jonathan Toews was credited with the goal. Though the Blackhawks earned a point thanks to this mistake, the Lightning pulled out the win in OT.
