The Toronto Maple Leafs and Dion Phaneuf are reportedly close to agreeing on a major extension. A new extension has been rumored for quite some time now, but now it appears the two parties are "a couple of details" away from a contract which will keep Phaneuf in Toronto for years to come.
The seven-year, $49 million extension is believed to be all but done, as reported by Darren Dreger.
Aside from a couple of details, Phaneuf and the Leafs are very close on a 7 year, $7 mil per contract extension. Term was key. #tsn

Phaneuf, 28, would remain in Toronto through 2020-21 if the reported deal is finalized. It's believed that the length of the contract (seven years) was an area of major importance for the defenseman. The Star reports that the only detailed left to be ironed out involve a no-trade, no-movement clause.
Look for the extension to be announced in the near future.
