Penguins ranked top NHL franchise in ESPN the Magazine fan survey

ESPN the Magazine released some of the results from their "Ultimate Standings" fan survey and the Pittsburgh Penguins were selected as the top franchise in the NHL. Out of the 122 sports teams across the four major sports, the Penguins finished in the seventh overall spot.

The survey judged eight different categories: Fan relations, affordability, bang for the buck, stadium experience, players, ownership, title track and coaching. As you'll notice, some of these categories are based on actual statistics while others are extremely subjective.

As with any NHL story connected to ESPN, don't read too far into it. The survey named the Memphis Grizzlies the "Best Overall Sports Franchise" in sports, so that pretty much says it all.

Here are the top-10 teams according to the survey:

1. Memphis Grizzlies (NBA)
2. San Antonio Spurs (NBA)
3. Indiana Pacers (NBA)
4. Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA)
5. Green Bay Packers (NFL)
6. Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB)
7. Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL)
8. Anaheim Ducks (NHL)
9. Ottawa Senators (NHL)
10. Baltimore Ravens (NFL).

It's worth pointing out that three NHL teams (Ducks, Penguins and Senators) made the top-10 while only one MLB team and two NFL teams are represented. It's also kind of peculiar that four NBA teams not only made the top-10, but that they beat out every other NFL, MLB and NHL team.
