Following the 2012-13 season, Brendan Shanahan made it clear that the NHL was trying to remove the spin-o-rama from NHL shootouts. In an interview with the Sporting News back in June, Shanahan stated that though the move is extremely entertaining, the integrity of the goal being scored is in question.
The NHL's general managers attempted to make the spin-o-rama illegal for 2013-14, but the NHLPA wasn't in favor of banning the move from future shootouts. As a result, the move will remain a legal option for NHL skaters in their quest to beat the goaltender.
Shanahan's comments from June:
It is about entertainment, but it's also about the integrity of the goal, of the shot. I think that there's some very entertaining moves that you can still do in a shootout. I think when we looked at some of the spin-o-ramas, there was a lot of interference with goaltenders, there was a lot of questions as to whether the puck was still moving forward or the player was still moving forward. So, certainly it's all about entertainment, but it's also about the integrity of the goal. I think that, over time, that's become more and more in question.
Apparently the NHL didn't have the support from the NHLPA they thought they'd have. The NHL's Senior of Vice President of Operations, Mike Murphy, stated that he isn't sure if the spin-o-rama will even be reviewed again anytime soon.
I would say it's put to bed for a few years.
